Project Update

Research continues across the project’s seven trial sites, with the second round of basalt just applied to the banana site and the team preparing the second round of basalt spreading for the northern grain and avocado sties. The first harvest has been completed in the avocado, northern grain, cotton and rice trials and the first […]
Congratulations Carbonaught!

The Australian Government has just announced that it will grant Carbonaught $10 million from its Carbon Capture Technologies Program to remove atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) through enhanced rock weathering on agricultural land. This will advance the pathway to broader deployment in Australia. Latest news on DCCEEW Carbon Management Technologies
Highlights from ERWRANZ Symposium and Field Trial Visit

The Enhanced Rock Weathering Research in Australia and New Zealand Symposium brought together 60 researchers, practitioners, early-career researchers and collaborators in person at JCU’s Nguma-bada Campus in Cairns, with a further 20 participants joining online, to discuss the latest developments in enhanced rock weathering (ERW). On the following day, participants, students and members of the […]
First Harvest Project Update

First Harvest sampling across ERW trial sites We are pleased to report that our team has completed the first harvest since basalt application across four of our seven trial sites. Avocado harvest (Credit: Emma Carmichael) Avocado We recorded fruit weight and size, as well as total yield from two trees within each plot. […]
ERW features in ‘CSIRO CDR Roadmap’

Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) is one of four novel technologies highlighted in CSIRO’s Australian Carbon Dioxide Removal Roadmap, launched late 2025, as critical for Australia achieving net zero emissions by 2050. CSIRO projects ERW could capture 22 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually by 2050, around 5% of Australia’s 2025 emissions. Key challenges and research […]
Announcing our Symposium Presenters

We are pleased to announce the presenters for the Enhanced Rock Weathering Research in Australia and New Zealand Symposium hosted by James Cook University, Cairns on Thursday 25 June 2026. The program brings together leading researchers and practitioners from universities, CSIRO, and research organisations across the region. Presentations will cover key developments in enhanced rock […]
ERW expands to Grain in Kangaroo Island, SA

The Enhanced Rock Weathering Project, has now established its seventh and final trial site. This new trial is located in a temperate region characterised by dry, warm summers, where wheat, barley and canola are typically grown. For this first crop, broad beans will be planted. Throughout the trial, which will run until June 2028, crop […]
ERW expands to Victorian dairy pastures

New trial site in an irrigated dairy system, Victoria. Located near Warrnambool, this new trial site is on an irrigated dairy property. The trial will run until June 2028 with several rounds of pasture growth measurements per year. Researchers are applying basalt at three different rates and potassium at two rates, using a randomised block […]
ERW expands to Central Queensland grain country

New trial site established in Central Queensland. The Enhanced Rock Weathering Project has reached a major milestone with the establishment of its fifth trial site in November 2025. This crucial new trial, set in the hot, semi-arid Central Queensland Highlands near Emerald, is focused on grain crops. It is a collaborative effort with the Queensland […]
ERW features in ‘Australian Bananas Magazine’, December 2025

Basalt on bananas: Pioneering trials in FNQ We are excited to share that our ERW project was featured in Australian Bananas Magazine, Issue 75 (December 2025).
