ERW expands into southern grain country on Kangaroo Island, South Australia

The Enhanced Rock Weathering Project, has now established its seventh and final trial site.

This new trial is located in a temperate region characterised by dry, warm summers, where wheat, barley and canola are typically grown. For this first crop, broad beans will be planted.

Throughout the trial, which will run until June 2028, crop yield and nutrient content will be measured and compared across the different plots. Researchers are applying basalt and agricultural lime at three different rates using a factorial trial design.

This work is essential for improving our understanding of the potential of enhanced rock weathering to sequester carbon and improve soil health in dryland farming systems in southern Australia.
