The Enhanced Rock Weathering Project has reached a major milestone with the establishment of its fifth trial site in November 2025.
This crucial new trial, set in the hot, semi-arid Central Queensland Highlands near Emerald, is focused on grain crops. It is a collaborative effort with the Queensland Department of Primary Industries and the Central Queensland Smart Cropping Centre.
Running until at least March 2028, researchers are applying basalt at three different rates to monitor grain yield, soil core properties, and changes in carbonate levels. This work is essential to understanding the long-term potential of ERW for sequestering carbon and improving soil health in the unique environment of the Central Queensland cropping region.
