The ERW research community came together in Cairns to discuss their latest research and findings on the use of enhanced rock weathering for soil improvement and drawdown of carbon. The published volume of research highlights including abstracts, session recordings and poster presentations. Link to proceedings.
At the Symposium presentations explained the latest research into how ERW works, overviewed carbon dioxide removal commitments and requirements, and explored the potential contribution of ERW to carbon removal. Speakers then discussed constraints and challenges associated with ERW, including the implications of organic-inorganic interactions, societal expectations, and approaches for deployment and commercialisation.
Further presentations showcased recent results from field trials in diverse agricultural systems across Australia and New Zealand, research into the mechanisms of weathering and carbon capture, comparisons of different basalt types and particle sizes, applications in challenging landscapes, and the influence of ERW on soil properties and carbon sequestration. The ERW project team were very pleased with the success of their symposium and the level of interest from researchers, government bodies, industry, farmers and stakeholders. We have established a network to foster new connections and create opportunities for future collaboration across Australia and New Zealand.
